Mochi—a bite size dessert—signifies the small moments of joy in life.

Between research and medical school, I had chosen to commit my life to helping the most vulnerable patients. I wanted to provide accessible care for communities traditionally ignored by healthcare: those without insurance, those facing language and cultural barriers, or those in rural communities.

Healthcare has a history of blaming weight as some type of moral failing on the patient.

Almost every day, at least one patient would ask about weight loss strategies. These patients were often embarrassed or nervous when asking, as healthcare has a history of blaming weight as some type of moral failing on the patient.

Despite having learned about comprehensive weight loss strategies used by bariatric surgery practices and obesity medicine providers, I rarely saw these recommended. More often, I saw providers use shame when discussing a patient's hypertension, dismiss other medical concerns due to bias, and refuse to use safe and affordable medications in favor of "diet and exercise only" strategies. These providers didn't see the value in listening to patients.

I saw providers use shame when discussing a patient's hypertension, dismiss other medical concerns due to bias, and refuse to use safe and affordable medications in favor of "diet and exercise only" strategies.

What excites me most about Mochi is we connect providers with patients to discuss evidence-based weight loss strategies using every tool in our belt: Licensed RDNs, MDs who are Board Certified in Obesity Medicine, CBT-i for sleep therapy, and prescription medication. We customize treatment approaches based on eligibility form responses to provide the best results.

We always get asked, why Mochi Health? Mochi—a bite size dessert—signifies the small moments of joy in life. It’s a reminder to live today, that no matter where you are in your journey, whether that involves weight loss or not, that we should center ourselves around what is good & use that as fuel to build towards the tomorrow of our dreams.

This company was really born partially from my deepest pain.

I’ve struggled with weight most of my life. Looking back at old pics, I can see how visibly uncomfortable I am in my own skin. I was always athletic, but when I stopped swimming varsity my senior year of high school, I gained 30 lbs in less than 3 months. The weight carried on into freshman year of college & it wasn’t until the summer after that I started getting back in shape.

This was the beginning of a series of weight cycles. I lost weight, looked great, maintained it for a bit & eventually put on weight again. After I graduated college, I was determined to get as fit as possible to compete for Miss Washington USA, a beauty pageant. I had a great job at Microsoft, I’d graduated from Berkeley with two degrees in Computer Science and Economics... I was honestly convinced that my life would be perfect if I JUST LOST THE WEIGHT.

I was honestly convinced that my life would be perfect if I JUST LOST THE WEIGHT.

I did lose the weight, but six months leading up to the Miss Washington USA, I had no social life. It’s hard to admit but by competition day, I had a full blown eating disorder.

It took two years of my life, 50 lbs gained during the pandemic, and a lot of support from my community to get back to a point where I wasn’t constantly punishing my body with a lack of food. But even when I got honestly my life back, I was stuck at this point where I was the heaviest I’d ever been, almost 200lbs on a 5’6” frame. I had good health insurance & still spent thousands of dollars & most of my early 20’s seeking out every kind of medical expert to help me. Nothing was working, and at some point, I was tired of being patronized. I was tired of waiting for a tomorrow where things would be perfect and I would be happy.

That’s what excites me about Mochi: I am the target customer. I’m the person who has gained and lost weight again and again. I’m the person who felt patronized by doctors who never believed me when I said that I exercised regularly and barely ate. I’m the sucker who has been preyed upon because I would have tried anything, every fad diet, every fake pill. I’ve spent the tens of thousands of dollars on trainers, nutritionists, supplements. I’ve tried Ayurveda, acupuncture, Buddhist healing. I’m the person who so desperately wants what everyone around me seem to have effortlessly: a healthy, happy life.

Mochi Health was born from what I so desperately needed: a customizable, evidence-based, empathetic approach to weight loss. We are creating a company that understands that effective weight loss looks different for everyone, that expert support is a game changer, that accessibility & affordability are crucial, and that sustainability is as important as trust.
